The first kamakazes began in 1944

Luzon 15 October
A kamakaze crashed into the US carrier Franklin which was then forced to withdraw.

Iwo Jima February 1945
February 21 kamikazes attacked and sunk the escort carrier Bismarck Sea and damaged a further five other ships including the US Saratoga.

Okinawa March-April1944

  • 11 March carrier Randolph hit by a kamikaze.
  • 18 March 40 aircraft attacked and damaged Intrepid.
  • 26 March 9 US ships including the battleship Nevada were hit by kamakazes.
  • 29 March Heavy cruiser Indianapolis hit
  • New Mexico hit
  • 6/7 April 355 kamakaze took off with 200 being shot down. The destroyers Bush and Calhoun were sunk and 25 other ships were damaged.
  • Damaged ships on the 7th included the carrier Hancock and the battleship Maryland.
