First stage in the battle for Luzon, 175,000 American troops were landed, into a beachead of 20 miles. It was here that the escort carrier Ommaney bay was lost to a kamikaze attack as was a destroyer. Two dozen other ships were also damaged with this increasing to 44 by January 13. The Australian heavy cruiser Australia was hit 5 times.

April 1, 1945
Invasion of Okinawa by US forces backed up by a strong naval presence that was to feel the Kamikazes. Six American vessels including the two main ammunition ships were sunk. Ten other ships were driven off needing repairs. Until the fall of Okinawa thirty four ships were sunk and a further 368 damaged from the air. Several of the fleet carriers took serious damage during the Kamikaze attacks. US destroyer Hazelwood badly damaged by a kamikaze as was the destroyer Laffey.

Yamato's final sortie

Yamato accompanied by the light cruiser Yahagi and 8 destroyers (including the Hamakaze) headed for Okinawa.
Yahagi, Hamakaze and three other destroyers sunk by carrier based aircraft 6th-7th April while Yamato repeatedly bombed and torpedoed before going down.

April 6-7, 1945
An American carrier the Hancock took damage from a kamikaze as did the Battleship Maryland. Two destroyers the Bush and the Calhoun were sunk and 25 other ships were also damaged in the 355 kamikaze attacks that took place over the two days.
Three destroyers were sunk, an LST, and two ammunition laden freighters. 17 other ships were damaged some so badly they would be scrapped as soon as the war was over. USS Emmons kamikazed and sunk off Okinawa.

Destruction of the remains of the Japanese fleet carried out over 3 days by US planes. The battleships Nagata, Ise, Haruna and Hyuga, the carrier Amagi and the cruisers Tone, Aoba, Oyodo, Iwate and Izumo were either sunk or destroyed.
The carrier Katsuragi was also bombed on the 24th July, but was able to be patched up to act as a repatriation transport.
Heavy cruiser Tone sunk July 28 along with 8 auxiliaries.

July 29, 1945
The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis (Captain Charles McVay) on her way to Leyte was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine I58 (Commander Hashimoto Mochitsura).

August 9, 1945
USS bone kamikazed off Japan.

American and British submarines sank other than merchant targets about 40 ecort ships, a few destroyers and a handful of cruisers in 1945.
